Study of dynamics of the forest stock, game inventory and management, the technical support of GIS for the GMFA.

  1. Draft scheme of game survey and management

Characteristics of game resources of GMFA are given, their productivity is assessed, the resource potential for game management is evaluated: average number, density of populations, descriptions of species under the following classification: fur, hoofed, water birds, rare and protected animals. Measures are recommended for reproduction and protection of game resources and their sustainable taking.

  1. Design for organization and conducting forest management of GMFA

The design is based on the data of forest inventory. The forest management plan is designed for the ash tree and other stands based on the principles of sustainable use. The allowable cut is calculated for basic commercial tree species.

  1. Analysis of the dynamics of the GMFA’s forest stock for the period 1982-1995. Selection of the optimum strategy of forest management to the year 2004.

In the past 13 years, from the previous forest inventory, the tree-covered area increased by

5 % for valueless tree species, and the treeless area became almost twice as less. Total area of mature and overmature stands increased by 1 %, but the quality condition of the forest stock worsened. The area of mature spruce stands was reduced by 10 %, while that of larch stands - by 19 %. Their capacity was reduced by 0.4 of a bonitet class (site quality), and the average increment of coniferous species was reduced by 7-15 %. The area of protected nut-production cedar-pine stands as well as other cedar-pine stands remained the same. Forest management strategy should stipulate control over the forest users, forest fire control and multiple use of cedar-pine forests.

  1. Inventory of forest resources

General data has been collected on the possible harvesting of non-timber products, the calculations were conducted based on the principle of sustainable use. A complex inventory of cedar-pine stands was performed.

  1. Creation and technical support of GIS

The structure of GIS for GMFA has been developed. A set of equipment for the creation of GIS has been purchased: keys for ARC\INFO, keys for ARC\VIEW, scanners, digitizers, and also the systems GEOGRAPH, GEODRAW and keys for MAP\EDIT. Terrain and forest inventory maps of GMFA have been digitized.
