Basic Findings of the Scientific Studies

Within the framework of the scientific block of the GMFA’s program there were 27 research projects in three fields of science: forest ecology, social economy, and engineering. Basic methods of the studies were expedition parties, field observations, stationary measurements, and laboratory experiments. The studies resulted in the following:

  1. Main characteristics of the composition, dynamics and rates of reproduction of forest resources have been made known and systematic.
  2. Computer-based and hard-copy large-scale maps of types of habitat based on the geo-top approach, maps of forest types and basic forest formations, maps of succession dynamics and exogenic disturbance of the forest cover, geo-botanical maps and those of habitat areas and bio-cenotic states of basic species of game, rare and endangered species of animals, etc.
  3. The territory of the GMFA is classified in accordance with the priority of the kinds of use based on the ecologically justified scheme of protected forests, on assessment and anticipation of ecological risk, composition and dynamics of biological diversity.
  4. Computer software is developed for evaluation of forest sites allotted for cutting, for automatic selection of the most rational type of harvesting, taking into account the particularities of the forest site.
  5. Special technique is developed for assessment of environmental effects of forest formations taking into account their location in the watershed basin, for assessment of forest cover based on productivity of forest stands, for creation of forest cadaster, for analysis of the gene pool of the basic forest-producing species.
  6. A new system is developed for conducting environmentally justified forestry based on the ideology of river basins of various hierarchy.
  7. An approach for assessment of biological diversity is proposed as both a tool and a goal for forest management.
  8. Technique for production of consumer goods from non-wood forest and wet-land resources is developed.
  9. Recreation use of the territory of the GFMA is assessed.
  10. The Program for economic development of indigenous communes is developed.
  11. The GIS based on ARC\INFO and GEOGRAPH is created.

Software for computer monitoring of the condition of forest reserves and forest fires is developed and implemented in the GFMA area.
